On the Mac side, at least, Office isn’t updated all that often: Office 2011 was released in October of 2010. Assuming a new release comes out in 2014 (and you I use Office at home on multiple Macs. Excel for Mac 2011. Things get murkier when you add multiple computers to the mix, because of. So when buying, you basically have to decide two things: which of the three processors do you want, and how much storage do you need. While the new Skylake-based chipset is faster than last year's model, it still offers about an hour more of battery But it's not the only option available for Mac users. We know lots of people struggle to know what they should consider before they buy a new computer. Whether it is a computer, laptop or tablet, at this time of year it can be daunting. Hopefully the following questions may help. Do you really need to buy a new computer? We have lots of customers come to us saying that they need a new computer because their old one is slow. Often this is true, but equally often it is not the computer but their broadband connection. If it is the broadband connection then a new computer may be a false investment. How can you tell? Is the computer slow ONLY when you are on the Internet. Or is it absolutely fine when you are viewing photographs on the computer, typing documents, etc.? If the answer is yes, then the problem may not be the computer but your broadband. See some tips on what to look for here Do you really need a computer, or will a tablet do? Are you are only going to use the computer to browse the Internet, view photographs, communicate on social media and send e-mails? If so, then a tablet maybe a much cheaper option. Or do you want to edit and manipulate photographs, use Microsoft Office, home accounts packages, etc., etc? If so, then a computer may be better. We are also finding that people who have little experience of using computers are finding tablets a lot easier to manage. Do you need a computer or a laptop? Are you happy to use the computer in just one location? Or would you love the flexibility of being able to have it on your lap/the kitchen table/the garden or to take it away on holiday? There is no longer a significant price difference between computers and laptops now, so this is a personal choice. Apple Mac versus Microsoft? This is very much a personal choice. These are our observations. Macs • The choice for those who want to be fashionable. • Definitely at the moment they are n ot so vulnerable to viruses, so if you have someone in the household who has cost you a lot of money in the past as they have dodgy surfing habits then this may be the option to chose • Easiest to set up and install new software, so good for people who have very little computer experience • Integration between iPhones, iPads, iCloud is exceptional • More expensive than Microsoft Windows computers. People often say Macs last longer than Windows computers and we agree that Macs are built very well. That said don’t compare a £1000 Mac with a £300 Windows computer! If you are going to pay £1000 for a Mac then compare it with a £1000 Windows computer • You may not be able to get your favourite software for Mac (this is less of a problem nowadays but should still be considered) • Macs have a v ery different user interface to Windows. Confident computer people rarely have a problem with this but people who are not confident with computers and are used to Windows may struggle Microsoft Windows • The most popular choice which means there is a wider choice of software available and a wider choice of hardware, printers, etc. • Microsoft Windows computers are available cheaper so if budget is an issue this is the option you should consider first • You must use a good anti-virus software program. If you bank online and make lots of online purchases then ensure the software provides adequate protection for these (the majority of free anti-virus software programs do not) • Integration with Windows and Android devices and phones is possible – you are not restricted to Mac products, which can be more expensive • More people are familiar with installing software and hardware for Microsoft Windows so getting amateur and professional IT support is easier and less costly Microsoft Windows 7 versus Microsoft Windows 8.1 For businesses the choice is simple – Windows 7. Important Update: Microsoft Office 2019 for Mac has now been released. We strongly recommend upgrading to Office 2019 as it fixes many of the problems users commonly experience in Office 2016. If you’re having problems with Office 2016 for Mac especially Outlook 2016 crashes, Word 2016 crashing. Last updated: March 14, 2018. After updating to Version 1803 (Build 9126.2072), you may find that when you open an existing meeting in the calendar and send an update with updated location, the recipient still sees the old location. [ Editor’s note: This is a review of the final, shipping version of Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac. The software was provided to Macworld by Microsoft in advance of the suite’s general release.] is a new e-mail client and personal information manager from Microsoft, not just an upgrade to its predecessor, ( ). Outlook 2011 has some features that Entourage had, but if you approach Outlook 2011 expecting it to be an upgraded Entourge, you’re going to be frustrated. As someone who is, by any measure of the term, an Entourage power user, I found that once I stopped thinking about Outlook as “Entourage 2011,” my experience with the new software quickly became much easier. Version 1.0 Outlook 2011’s Mailing List Manager, Scheduling Manager, and Rules implementation are mostly unchanged from Entourage. Otherwise, Outlook 2011 is all new. Anyone used to modern versions of Outlook on the PC, or for anyone on a Mac who needs to talk to Exchange, will find that Outlook 2011 will be kinder to you than Entourage ever was—as long as you're using Exchange Server 2007 or later. Outlook 2011 does not support the older HTTP-DAV connection method that Entourage used. Outlook 2011 is a Cocoa application; it doesn’t have a legacy of over 20-plus years on the Mac and doesn’t have the kind of code base that the other Office programs have. Moving forward, the Outlook development team will have an easier time than the other Office development teams with operating system compatibility. Unlike the rest of the Office 2011 suite, Outlook 2011 supports Mac OS Services (so did Entourage), and you get some of the basic niceties that Cocoa has. Though I did no benchmark testing, Outlook 2011 feels faster than Entourage. Outlook 2011 launches minutes faster for me on the first launch of the day after a shutdown. Some of the user interface (UI) lags in Entourage while checking mail or doing other tasks never appeared or were far less annoying than in Entourage. Cocoa magic aside, drag and drop in Carbon applications always works more intuitively. As a result, Outlook 2011 takes a step back when it comes to drag and drop. You don’t have to do the click-and-hold delay when dragging text, and dragging an attachment into a background Entourage mail window is a far simpler experience than doing so with Outlook 2011, where I had to bring the message window to the foreground and then drag the file from a Finder window in the background to the message window. I’ve seen the same behavior in other Cocoa applications—Cocoa just doesn’t do drag and drop as well as Carbon. I tested Outlook 2011 in the same configuration that I use Entourage on a daily basis: six IMAP accounts total, with three accounts using SSL for both send and receive, two Gmail accounts, and one Exchange 2007 Exchange Web Services (EWS) account. Back-end servers run the gamut from MobileMe, Kerio, and Communigate Pro to Exchange 2007. I have over 70 IMAP rules, a handful of SMTP and Exchange rules, and too many Mailing List Manager rules to count. I also have an Exchange Calendar with gobs of public folders (I live by my to-do lists), and I have three separate Directory Service accounts that I use as part of my work. The database Entourage's database was a big file that changed constantly, which made for painful backups. The big news in Outlook 2011 is that there is a new way of dealing with Outlook items, and each item is stored as an individual file or files—however, there’s still a database. Database: Outlook 2011 still uses a database, but Microsoft re-engineered the program so that the database isn't essential to storing data. According to the Outlook development team, the database is there purely to optimize search and other non-essential routines. So what would happen if I deleted the database? After quitting Outlook 2011 and the Database Daemon process, I deleted the database file and restarted Outlook 2011. The program popped a message saying that since I had restored from Time Machine, (amusingly, this message is hardcoded into Outlook 2011 based on the assumption that the only time you’re going to have all the individual files and no database is after a Time Machine restore), it was going to rebuild the database, which it did. The database is not only non-critical, it's much smaller; in my case, my Entourage Database is under 5.5GB, and my Outlook 2011 database is over 500MB. Not a bad reduction, and you can ignore it completely for backups. Time Machine support is a mixed bag. Because everything is in individual files, once you’ve done your initial backup, then any changes only require backing up those changes, (just make sure you exclude the Outlook 2011 database from Time Machine.) However, there’s no actual Time Machine integration, a la Apple ( ). And due to the requirements of Spotlight and others, the deeper folder structure is incomprehensible. USB 3.0 External DVD CD Drive, Tagital Slim Portable External DVD/CD RW Burner Drive for l aptop, Notebook, Desktop, Mac Mac book Pro, Mac book Air. : The retina MacBook Pro doesn't have a CD rom drive. You may purchase apple super drive to fulfill the purpose. However MacBook Pro without Retina display has a CD drive. Hope this answers your question. Apple computers without a built-in optical drive can connect an external Apple USB SuperDrive or MacBook Air SuperDrive to read optical media such as CDs and DVDs. The Apple USB SuperDrive has a slightly longer (340mm) cable compared to the cable on the MacBook Air SuperDrive (250mm). Both SuperDrives are functionally equivalent. Older models of the MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Pro, and Mac mini computers have a built-in SuperDrive. The SuperDrive uses a slot-loading mechanism which pulls the disc directly in rather than first placing the disc onto a loading tray. Older Mac Pro models use a loading tray. • Make sure the Apple USB SuperDrive is lying flat on a surface with the silver top facing upward (shown below). If the Superdrive is oriented upside down it will not read discs. Correct: Aluminum enclosure is facing up Incorrect: Apple logo should be facing down Because the USB port on external displays may not be powered at startup, connect the drive directly to the USB ports on your Apple computer when you need to use the Superdrive as a startup device. Reconnect the Superdrive directly to the display when you no longer need to start the computer from the SuperDrive. • The Apple USB SuperDrive and MacBook Air SuperDrive are designed exclusively for use with Mac computers that do not have a built-in optical drive. Plug in the SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port. Don't use a USB hub. • You can also connect the SuperDrive to the USB ports on the back of the Apple LED Cinema Display (24-inch, Late 2008), Apple LED Cinema Display (27-inch), or Apple Thunderbolt Display. • Be sure not to put the drive underneath anything heavy, underneath your computer, or on top of your computer. • If you have trouble using a SuperDrive with Microsoft Windows, try starting the computer with the SuperDrive already plugged in. • Be sure to check your disc to make sure it is flat. You can check this by putting the disc upside-down on a flat surface. If the disc is bowed up on any side or in the center, do not use the disc because it might get stuck in the drive. Do not use discs that have anything attached to them or dangling from them (such as 'sweeper' or cleaning discs). • If the drive struggles when you put in a disc or stops part-way, carefully look at the disc for labels that may be interfering. If there aren't any raised labels then try putting the disc in a few more times. • Try another disc to see if the issue is being caused by a specific disc. • Make sure you insert the disc far enough for the drive mechanism to activate. You need to insert discs nearly all the way before the drive will activate and pull them in. If you don't completely insert a disc, the drive will reverse and push the disc back out. • Allow the drive one or two seconds to accept the disc while it is fully inserted. • If the drive repeatedly does not accept discs, or an, or make an appointment with an. Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition GOG File marked as fake or malicious, links removed. Using BitTorrent is legal, downloading copyrighted material isn’t. Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition has just got a huge update that comes with the Siege of Dragonspear expansion pack. Patch 2.0 adds a new character class, balance tweaks, UI overhaul, modding features and more. I know this is a STEAM game but i just got this off the web: There's a new patch available, which you can apply when you load up the standalone launcher or the beamdog client. For those players using the client, the announcement describing the content of the patch won't display, so here it is: New patch with fixes for unicode characters in paths, mouse cursors not showing up, crash reporting. The crash reporting is handled through a crash dump file that's created any time the game crashes. These files are placed in the Documents Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition directory, in the 'crash' folder. UPDATE: Send us your.dmp files! In order to fix things more efficiently, the developers have asked that.dmp files be brought to their attention. A.dmp file is important for finding the source of a crash, which then makes preventing future crashes easier. If your game crashes, the game now creates a.dmp file under Documents Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition crash, which you can email directly to me at and I'll make sure it gets seen. These.dmp files are invaluable for figuring out not just what's happening on your system, but also why it's causing your game to crash, which will allow the developers to find a solution. Finally--and this is very important: Do not install a mod on your game unless it has been confirmed to be compatible with the Enhanced Edition. This is ultimately the root cause of a lot of the problems people are experiencing (or enough to warrant this reminder, at least). If you're wanting to use a favorite mod, just be patient; a lot of the modders are beta testers so they've had a bit of a head start, but it still may take some time to update all of them. Installing the old mods can cause instabilities in your game, which may cause the game to crash or render it otherwise unplayable. About this game: Kidnapped. An excellent card and WELL worth upgrading to if you have an older card or even the Nvidia 120GT that ships with the new Nehelam mac pros. So after you flashed new card to work with Mac do you get Black sreen on a start up or regular Plus the tool itself is free to download and pretty easy to use! I hear variations of “How can I get more storage space on my MacBook Air?” and “I’m out of room on my MacBook Pro Retina” all the time. Until recently, all we could do was delete stuff from the SSD in order to free up space. Now, however, we can actually add storage space to our machines. There are two ways to do it. Option Number 1: * Transcend JetDrive Lite Many MacBook Airs and all MacBook Pro Retinas come with an SD or SDXC card slot on the side. Here’s what it looks like: MacBook Air SDXC Card Slot The slot is there so you can take the card out of a camera and stick it right into the laptop for transferring photos without a cable or card reader. Turns out almost nobody uses that slot, so it’s just sitting there doing nothing until now. Transcend makes a product called the * in 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB sizes and all you do is pop it into that unused slot, instantly increasing the storage capacity of the machine. It’s like having a USB drive permanently attached. The JetDrive Lite fits absolutely flush with your laptop rather than stick out a little, like a normal SD card would, and since the various Apple laptop models use different SDXC slots it is important to get the card that’s made specifically for your machine. Step 1 is to find out exactly which model you have. To do that, go to the Apple Menu, then About This Mac. Here’s how it looks on my MacBook Pro (non-Retina). The part that matters: MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012). About This Mac You can read all about the JetDrive Lite at. They have good info there to help you pick out the right model for your laptop. Figure out which model you need, then head to * to buy it. They have JetDrive Lites for MacBook Airs from 2010 to 2015, and MacBook Pro Retinas from 2012 TO 2015. That pretty much covers it! The JetDrive Lite is available at * in 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB sizes. Note: the storage space provided by the JetDrive Lite is separate from the space on the original SSD. So, if you have a 256 GB SSD, and you add a 128 JetDrive Lite, you don’t end up with a 384 GB drive. Instead, you’ll have a second hard drive (128 GB) in addition to your original 256. Practically speaking, what this means is you have to find something that you can stash on the JetDrive Lite, such as your iTunes Music folder, and use it more or less exclusively for that. Thrill-seeking advanced users can back up their entire hard disks and then use Disk Utility to create a single partition from the combined internal disk and the JetDrive Lite, and then copy everything back, but this makes it impossible to use the SDXC slot for anything else because that card has to stay in if the machine is going to work properly. If you do it “my way” (put the iTunes Music folder onto the JetDrive Lite) you can still pull the card out and use the slot for importing pictures from a camera if you ever feel like doing that. Option Number 2: * The very easy way to upgrade MacBook Pro Retina and MacBook Air storage involved sticking a card into the SDXC slot. That’s the “JetDrive Lite.” The less-easy way, but perhaps better-for-you-in-the-long-run way, is to take out the original too-small SSD and replace it with something bigger– namely, the “JetDrive” (not “Lite”). This requires opening up the case but that’s not all that hard, and that shows you how it’s done. (The video is about half-way down the page.) The JetDrive comes in 240 GB, 480 GB, and 960 GB models, and as with the Lite cards you have to get the right one. Use to figure out which one’s the right one for you, then head on over to * and get the part. Bonus: Transcend includes an enclosure for your old SSD, so you end up with the new, larger SSD inside the Mac and your old, smaller SSD in a case that you can use as an external hard disk. Note: long-time Mac upgrade supplier Other World Computing sells a line of SSD upgrades at prices comparable to Transcend’s JetDrive at Amazon. Here's how to get your non-Camera image/video files to import properly The product description warns that this device may only work for images and videos generated by a digital camera. It goes on to say that any random image/video The product description warns that this device may only work for images and videos generated by a digital camera. It goes on to say that any random image/video you have on your computer may not import. That's true, but there's a way to fix it. Here's how: 1. Update iOS device to iOS9.2 or later. Using your computer, create a folder called 'DCIM' to the root of your SD card (or microSD). Copy the images/videos into the DCIM folder. Micro SD Card Adapter for Macbook Pro, Air, Mac Mini and iMac Micro SD card is a small gadget or accessories in which we can store our valuable media material like songs, videos, pictures, documents etc and many more things. Rename each image/video file like this 'GOPRXXXX', where XXXX is a unique and incrementing number. For example, if you had one JPG file and one.MOV file, name them GOPR0001.JPG and GOPR0002.MOV. Incrementing numbers may not be required, but 'GOPR' + 4 numeric characters are. Safely eject SD card from computer, plug Reader into the iOS device, place SD card into the Reader, and Photos app should open. If you're file naming is acceptable, Import will remain open and allow you to view/import the files. Import and you're done! Note #1: Other common digital-camera file naming conventions will most likely work. Note #2: I've successfully imported several image filetypes:.jpg,.png,.raw. And these video types:.mov,.m4v,.MP4. I am sure many more will work. Also, you can have a mix of filetypes on the SD card simultaneously, and the import will work. For example, import will work with.jpg and.png and.m4v files on the card at the same time. This reader itself deserves 4 or 5 stars. It worked for me with several microSDHC cards of various levels of quality, each using a different SD adapter. However, it's the Photos app I find problematic. The Photos->Import feature requires a strict file structure like the one given above. A file named wookie_wants_cookie.jpg won't import. Why can't it be intelligent enough to accept any filename?
